“The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.”
Psalm 115:16 NKJV
#TusabaGavumentiEtuyambe is a common phrase that is used a lot by many Ugandans. Often time when you watch the 9 O’clock news you’ll hear Ugandans calling on the government to come to their aid with a specific service like repairing a road, a hospital, a security issue or even something more personal like a borehole in their community. Ideally, some of these services should not be provided by the government. What is really needed is for the community to come together under their local leaders, pull resources together and work on the issues affecting them and where they fail, they can lobby for government support through their local leaders and Members of Parliament.
When you think about this in terms of our Christian faith, many times Christians like to go all ‘T.G.E’ on God. We call on God to come and help us solve an issue that He has given us the capacity to solve. When you think about it, God does not need to perform any other miracle on earth. He has sent you and I to solve all the issues of this world and bring the heavenly experience here on earth. Imagine a married couple asking God for a child and never making time to be intimate with each other. That is scandalous to say the least! The Holy Spirit is not going to come from heaven and create another virgin birth.
Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20; “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” This means that Jesus has given us the authority to deal with the issues on the earth. He has given us the resources to make wealth, He has given us the resources to make disciples, he has even given us the authority to heal the sick and raise the dead. Psalm 115:16 says the heavens belong to God but the earth he has given to us. God gave ALL AUTHORITY to Jesus and Jesus passed the baton to us and even gave us the Holy Spirit for good measure. We have the creative power and authority to create the world we want and many time that starts with our speech. Just like our Father, we have the ability to speak things into being.
This however does not mean that we do not need God. We all need God’s guidance and help in everything but there is a difference between God’s role and our role in the different circumstances we face every day. So next time you sense a ‘Tusaba-God-Atuyambe’ moment coming on, stop and ask yourself what Jesus would do if faced with the same circumstance.
