Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Last May, we are going through a teaching series called ‘Powerful Living’ at my home church. This is a series about the Holy Spirit. I had the privilege of teaching about the Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23. This is a one of those texts from the bible that I’ve read many times. My daughter even taught me a nursery rhyme from the same portion of text.
While I was preparing my sermon, I took off time to meditate on the text like I usually do and I believe I got a revelation that I had not seen before. I would like to share with you.
From verse 22, we can tell that the fruit of the Spirit is one. This is because it says ‘Fruit’ and not ‘fruits.’ Now if we assume for a moment that this fruit is an actual fruit that means that the different attributes it contains are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. For the purpose of this illustration let’s call them nutrients or vitamins.
Now if you cut up this fruit and eat a piece of it, this means you’ve eaten all the nutrients and not one or a few of them. What if you get the remaining pieces, put them in a blender and make fresh fruit juice, can you sieve out ‘vitamin love’ or even ‘vitamin peace’ only and leave out self-control? Absolutely not. The same way you can’t drink only the mango or orange from a fruit cocktail, it’s impossible to receive only parts of the fruit of the Spirit.
When we get born again and we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive the WHOLE FRUIT of the Holy Spirit in our born-again spirits. Inside of us is every attribute of the Fruit of the Spirit. Our role is then to renew our minds (Romans 12:1-2) and to walk in fellowship with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:25) who releases all these attributes in our lives.
