Perfection! We strive for it, mostly secretly but sometimes even publicly. We fail all too often. Even when we think we’ve hit our set standard, someone comes up with a new one. Aaarrghh!
Now, Perfection is subjective because it is determined by the one who set the standard. What’s perfect to you may be imperfect to another and the other way round.
For the longest time, I strived for perfection as a child of God – if only I could spend a day without being “sinful”… and boy did I try, until I encountered a few “standards” that included stumbling i.e. accidental sin to be sin! James 2:10 says “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet STUMBLE in one point, he is guilty of all.” NKJV
Suddenly perfection toward God was no longer difficult; it was IMPOSSIBLE. How is one supposed to know more than 613 laws and not even stumble in keeping one part? I gave up!
That’s when a savior comes in; achieves perfection for us (Hebrews 4:15), and then asks us to approach boldly through Him – once we are IN Him, we are perfect! (Hebrews 10:14 –For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.)
Now, because perfection is subjective, we will meet different people with different standards of perfection, but the One we are striving to please has said YOU ARE PERFECT and the standard is being IN Christ. Remember perfection is determined by the one who set the standard. Whose standard will I respond to?
Everyday, I will hear voices saying “imperfect!” They are right. But I will also consistently hear His loving voice reminding me; YOU ARE PERFECT! And He is right.
Whose voice will I respond to? I think I will listen to the perfect one declaring;
“You are all fair, my love, And there is no spot in you.”
Song of Solomon 4:7 NKJV
